Highlights of WPCL Board Meeting, Nov 19th 2024

“One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals.” – Jean Vanier

Highlights of WPCL Board Meeting, Nov 19th 2024

Our November board meeting brought together our newly elected executive board for the first time since theIr appointment at the annual general meeting (AGM) in October. Here are the ‘highlights’ of the meeting. Approved minutes will be available at the next board meeting (Dec 17, 7PM).

Finance Reports

  • Financial Reports: Qtr2 Income Statement and Balance Sheet and Financial Report for Oct 2024 were presented.
  • Budget 2025-26: Budget preparation to begin immediately. Budget meeting will be held 17th December, 7PM aiming for board approval by mid January 2025, with CLOG (Community League Operating Grant) submission due end January 31.

Civics and Planning

  • Windsor Park Shopping Centre Rezoning: City of Edmonton public feedback deadline has been extended to December 9. Online engagement is available at www.engaged.edmonton.ca/windsorpark87ave. All community members are encouraged to respond. A March 2025 CoE public hearing is anticipated. The development committee will notify the community when date is made available (via enews). The league’s development committee will consider (and recommend) if the WPCL Board should take a formal position regarding this rezoning once the Planner’s report and recommendations on the rezoning application becomes available.
  • Spray Pad: Funding shortfall for this project is expected to exceed $55K. A spray park committee-led donation campaign is planned for spring 2025 pending North Park (NPDP) grant swap clarification.
  • Density Data: Windsor Park’s current density is 30 people/hectare. Garneau’s current density is 110 people/hectare.
  • Upcoming Developments: Square One Coffee shop opening date set for January 15, 2025.

Membership: 90%+ of membership purchases and renewals this membership year have been through Communal ( WPCL’s membership portal), where members can now set up automatic membership renewals and view and register for events, programs and volunteer roles as they become available. The board is considering adding the donation module to our toolkit.

Hall Operations:

  • Rentals: The hall currently has five regular rental groups and hosts numerous single-event rentals on a quarterly basis.
  • Rink: Seeking a Rink Assistant for our Firepit Fridays (opening the rink shack, helping kids with skates, skating etc). Community volunteer ice making team has begun ice making. Plans to sell a second donated snow blower and acquire one with a brush attachment.
  • Grants: Urgent and non-urgent infrastructure needs being compiled for CLIP grant application (50% matched grant); outdoor shed for equipment is prioritized.

Policy Updates

  • Anti-Bullying and Harassment Policy: Approved.
  • Bylaws Review: 2016 bylaws under revision; changes require approval at a general members’ meeting and subsequent submission to the Societies Registry.

  • Social Events: Mona Rai
  • Programs: Jannine Otto
