How WPCL Represents Our Community in Major Development Decisions

“One of the marvelous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals.” – Jean Vanier

How WPCL Represents Our Community in Major Development Decisions

Our neighbours naturally have questions, concerns, and strong opinions when a big development proposal comes to Windsor Park. This happened with the recent high-rise application. The Windsor Park Community League (WPCL) plays an important role in making sure those voices are heard.

We wanted to share how WPCL approaches these situations. We also wanted to explain what we can do and what we can’t do. Also, we would like to show you how you can get involved.

1. Keeping the Community Informed

We share relevant information about proposals as quickly as possible through our email list, social media, and e-newsletter. When possible, we host community forums or meetings to explain the details, answer questions, and gather feedback.

We rely on volunteers (your neighbours) so our capacity has limits, but we are committed to transparency and open communication.

2. Speaking for Windsor Park

The WPCL Board is accountable to its members. WPCL takes a stance based first and foremost on the views of Windsor Park members. It also considers its other residents, who are directly affected by changes in our neighbourhood. We also consider broader city goals, but local voices come first.

We aim to hear from as many members as possible. This ensures that our positions truly reflect the community majority. They do not just represent the most vocal participants.

3. Influencing Decisions

We can’t directly block or approve developments (that’s up to City Council) but we can:

  • Encourage residents to mobilise to provide coordinated feedback.
  • Engage with City Council and City staff to raise our community’s concerns.
  • Request studies and push for guidelines that reflect community priorities.
  • Encourage residents to attend public hearings, sign petitions, and join consultations.

4. Supporting Strongly Opposed Residents

For residents who feel strongly opposed to a proposal, WPCL can:

  • Provide clear, accessible information about the project and process.
  • Connect people with the right City channels to voice their concerns.
  • Create opportunities to meet, share perspectives, and coordinate efforts.

5. Parking and Density Concerns

If parking or density impacts are a concern, residents can raise these directly with the City Council. They should also copy WPCL’s Development Committee.

6. How You Can Help

The most effective community voices are those that are active and coordinated. You can:

  • Attend public meetings or hearings.
  • Send your feedback directly to the City Council.
  • Participate in WPCL surveys and discussions.
  • Share information with neighbours who may not be connected online.

Your voice matters. The more residents engage, the stronger our community’s influence will be. WPCL is here to connect, inform, and amplify your concerns so Windsor Park continues to be a great place to live for all of us.
