Green Spaces Weekend Recap
Thank you to everyone who joined us on September 6 & 7 for our Green Spaces Weekend!
On Saturday, participants explored the North Park, learning about its mid-century landscape design and diverse tree species. They also worked alongside Partners in Parks gardeners, planting and tending the beds before enjoying a picnic in the sunken garden.
On Sunday, workshops focused on sustainable practices for yards, gardens, balconies, and windowsills. Topics included composting, pesticide-free gardening, creating wildlife-friendly habitats, and growing native plants.
While attendance was modest, it was still a warm and engaging weekend that sparked new ideas for caring for our green spaces.
Highlights from the Weekend
- A discussion of the architectural history of the North Park led by historian Patsy Leake
- A tour of the North Park arboretum with botanist Elisabeth Beaubien
- Planting of Canada Violets and Bunchberries and tending garden beds with the Partners in Parks gardeners
- A composting workshop (including vermicomposting) led by Hamza Razzo (City of Edmonton)
- A pesticide-free gardening session with Dr. Raquel Feroe (Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment)
- A wildlife-friendly habitats workshop led by Martha Steenstrup
- A native plant gardening session with Manna Parseyan (Arnica Wildflowers)
Participants thoroughly enjoyed the weekend’s activities.
We look forward to building on this momentum with more events that celebrate Windsor Park’s natural beauty.
A heartfelt thank you to Martha Steenstrup for organising and leading this event, to all workshop hosts, to our ‘behind the scenes’ league volunteers and to TD Bank and Park People for making this event possible through the TD Park People Grants program, which supports community-led initiatives that bring people together in city parks across Canada.
