March EDO Talk Recap – Polar Bears in the Arctic

March EDO Talk Recap – Polar Bears in the Arctic

On 11th March, EDO Talk attendees were excited to welcome Andrew Derocher, a leading polar bear biologist, to share his incredible insights about life in the Arctic and the science behind studying these iconic animals.

Andrew has studied polar bears for over 40 years and shared fascinating facts about their lives. Did you know…?

~ Polar bears are apex predators that mainly eat ringed and bearded seals, but they focus on the high-fat blubber, which can make up 90% of a meal.

~ A mother polar bear may spend up to 8 months in a den raising her cubs without eating, relying entirely on fat reserves.

~ Polar bears can travel hundreds of kilometres across sea ice to hunt and survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

~ Climate change is shrinking sea ice, forcing polar bears to move farther and hunt longer, which affects their survival and reproduction.

~ Polar bear populations are changing, and hybrids with grizzly bears have been observed as Arctic ranges shift.  Andrew also shared how researchers track bears using satellite collars, study their diet and health through blood and tooth samples, and observe interactions between polar bears and other Arctic wildlife like arctic foxes, ravens, and even grizzly bears.

Amazing stuff! Thanks to Andrew and everyone who came along to this months talk.

We are grateful to all Windsor Park community members who take the time to share their passions and expertise. If you’d like to host a session and share your own knowledge, story or hobby, please info@windsor-park.ca. We’d love to hear from you!
