Earth Day Celebration Brings People and Nature Together

Earth Day Celebration Brings People and Nature Together

Windsor Park Community Hall came alive again this weekend as the community gathered – despite the snow and crazy April temps – to celebrate Earth Day!

Highlight of the event was the involvement on the Edmonton Native Plant Society and their vast knowledge of sustainable gardening and native plant species, and the presence of Melissa Penney, author of “How to Turn Your Backyard into an Avian Oasis” who was there to talk to anyone interested in learning more about urban wildlife habitats. Her ideas are always so inspiring, especially for those looking to support bird life right in their own backyards.

The seed swap was a steady hub of activity through the event, with neighbours sharing tips, stories and plenty of ideas for the summer ahead. The kids (young and old!) also had a chance to paint some pots and plant some seeds to take home.

The event was fun and welcoming for all ages, and more than anything it reinforced why Earth Day is one of Windsor Park’s “anchor” events – its not just about celebrating the environment, but about bringing people together around shared values and small, meaningful actions.

Although we were forced to cancel the other outdoor elements of the event including the Community Clean-Up and Bike Tuning, the Big Bin was on site all weekend, giving residents a practical way to contribute to a cleaner neighbourhood.

All in all – ANOTHER super successful Windsor Park Community League event. Thanks everyone!!

Events like our Earth Day celebration only happen because of the members who step up to organize and lead them. Whether it is something small or simple or a larger community gathering, it’s all driven by people who want to bring others together.

Have an idea for an event – or just looking for an excuse to gather? We would love to help you make it happen!
